Bluetooth MIDI

Connect wireless MIDI controllers to Neurode MIDI.

What is Bluetooth MIDI?

Bluetooth MIDI (also called BLE MIDI) lets you connect wireless MIDI controllers, keyboards, and other devices without cables.

Supported devices:

  • Bluetooth MIDI keyboards
  • Wireless foot controllers
  • iOS devices acting as MIDI sources
  • Any Bluetooth LE MIDI-compliant device

Pairing a Device

macOS

  1. SettingsBluetooth
  2. Tap Scan for Devices
  3. Put your device in pairing mode (see device manual)
  4. Select device from scan results
  5. Tap Connect

Connected devices appear in the Sources list with a Bluetooth label. Devices that expose writable BLE MIDI endpoints also appear in Destinations.

iPad/iPhone

  1. SettingsBluetooth
  2. Tap Scan
  3. Device in pairing mode
  4. Select and connect

Connection Status

Green indicator = connected
Gray = disconnected
Yellow = pairing in progress

Current Scope

Bluetooth support in this release covers both BLE MIDI input and output routing:

  1. Scan for nearby BLE MIDI devices.
  2. Connect a controller, keyboard, or instrument.
  3. Route Bluetooth sources to wired, virtual, or Bluetooth destinations.
  4. Route wired or virtual sources back out to Bluetooth destinations when the device exposes a writable BLE MIDI characteristic.

Not available yet:

  • Auto-reconnect controls
  • Battery indicators
  • Connection-timeout settings

Latency Considerations

Bluetooth MIDI typically adds 10-20ms latency:

  • Good enough for most playing styles
  • May be noticeable for fast runs or percussion
  • Test it — Latency varies by device and environment

Reduce latency:

  • Stay within 10 feet of receiver
  • Minimize wireless interference (WiFi, other Bluetooth devices)
  • Use newest Bluetooth standard (5.0+) if available

Practical Notes

  • Bluetooth MIDI usually has higher latency than wired MIDI.
  • Wired/CoreMIDI devices remain the primary path for lowest-latency performance.
  • If a Bluetooth source is disabled in the Sources list, its incoming MIDI is ignored until you re-enable it.
  • Bluetooth output only appears for devices that expose a writable BLE MIDI characteristic.

Troubleshooting

Can't find device

  • Device in pairing mode?
  • Bluetooth enabled on iPad/Mac?
  • Try restart both devices
  • Check device manual for pairing instructions

Dropouts or glitches

  • Move closer to iPad/Mac
  • Reduce wireless interference
  • Check the device battery externally
  • Disconnect and reconnect the device from the Bluetooth screen

High latency

  • Normal range: often higher than wired MIDI
  • If latency is too high for the session, switch to wired USB/CoreMIDI
  • Move closer and reduce interference before retrying

Bluetooth vs Wired

Recommendation: Use wired for latency-critical situations (live performance, recording). Use Bluetooth when convenience and mobility matter more than absolute latency.
